2018-2019 School Year: Kaohsiung Student VanguardBy Joyce Chen
In preparation for the 107 school year, Fushan Elementary School hosted the first round of Kaohsiung Student Vanguard on July 4th at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. There were seven schools, with 160 students in total. In the morning, Mr. Bao Sheng Chen gave a comprehensive lecture on the topic of “How to be a Good Tour Guide”. He highlighted how visual experience could influence the effectiveness of one’s tour according to the “55387 Rule”; meaning 55% of the speech is conveyed by the nonverbal communication, such as attire and attitude, 38% by the delivery techniques, and 7% by the actual content. Therefore, students should note the importance of non-verbal behavior during training, as well as the history and theories behind. Furthermore, the incorporation of storytelling technique and the connection to audience daily life strengthens the power of a great tour guide. Last but not least, Mr. Chen provided a Tour Guide SOP— know your audience; practice and commit yourself.
In the second half of the day, four museum tour guides provided students with hand-on experience by showing students around the “Still Water Runs Deep Exhibition”.
In conclusion, an outstanding tour guide is just like a performance artist, for they both require high commitment, great understanding of the target audience, organization of ideas, intense practice, and the ability to relax and enjoy under the spotlight.
